I was assigned a project at Insulet Corporation to research and create 3D printed mockups of competing insulin pumps for the Marketing department. The pumps I focused on were:

• Sigi

• Tandem T-Sport

• Thermalin

• Triple Jump

I began by researching the pumps and finding reference materials that would be useful in creating the models. All four pumps were in the process of being developed but had been announced at conferences or in press releases, so there were several images with size references available.

With the images, I used the SolidWorks scaling tool to create sketches of the outline of the pumps. I was able to estimate the shape of the pumps based on the outlines, and also created drawings for the patch outlines for the pumps that had them in the images.

I then 3D printed the models using a Formlabs Form 3 printer. For the Tandem T-Sport pump, I also purchased similar tubing to what was in the reference images so that I could glue it onto the model.

I used a Silhouette Cameo 3 to create the patches needed from a roll of medical tape.

The final result was a set of mockups that depicted the size and shape of the pumps as accurately as possible. These mockups were then provided to the Marketing department for their own research.
